Within the heart of Jabal Amman, one of the most important heritage districts in Amman, at a magnificent urban hill overlooking the breathtaking views of the old city and the Roman then Islamic Citadel Hill, the Ahyaa Amman Boutique Hotel. The site that is the finale of a weekly summer market and a variety of cultural activities most of which take place within the site’s boundaries, and that houses a 90 year old classified house, will encompass the 9000 m2 Boutique hotel with its 40 rooms and variety of amenities. Within this setting, the project components were designed in a highly contextual and responsive manner to tell a narrative of an 8000 years old city, not only rich with Roman & Islamic history but also diverse in local and migrant cultures. A city shaped by its mixed use streets that house shops, cafes and residences, and its unique public stairs that instigated the city’s organic growth up its seven hills. Reflecting the Citadel plateau across, a podium that defines the urban edge of the lower street was created, providing an expanse of open space on top, where the old house is showcased with its original exteriors and renovated interiors that will be the hotels entry point. Offering magnificent views to the surrounding hills and the citadel, this open space will house the summer market activities in addition to outdoor cafes and the hotel’s swimming pool. Beside the old house, and within its proportions, and yet in a subtle contrast with it, a new modern block that houses 20 rooms rotates itself towards the citadel view. An Ammani courtyard was introduced within the podium providing a traditional outdoor experience to the hotel’s visitor and bringing in the outdoors into the hotels public spaces.
